ABOUT PEACE SILK/AHIMSA

“Ahimsa” is a sanskrit term that literally translates as “the avoidance of violence”. In the context of silk fibre production, “Ahimsa” refers to the ethical treatment of mulberry-eating silkworms.

HOW DOES ONE TREAT SILKWORMS NICELY

Instead of boiling the silk cocoon or piercing it in order to release the silk fiber from the cocoons before the moth emerges, killing the silk worm in the process, Ahimsa silk is extracted only after a metamorphosing worm has emerged from its cocoon, allowing it to complete an entire life cycle unharmed.

TYPES OF MOTHS

The silk moths best suited for the production of ahimsa silk are the Eri Silk Moth, Tassar moths and the Muga Silk Moth
